Amsterdam is so about the bikes.

Amsterdam is all about the bikes. Its striking. I DO NOT mean it's bike friendly in the bikes-get -a-nice-safe-path-safe-from-cars kind of way. They are a major means transportation for utility. The pictured bike is a type of long bike; this one extended in front (this is a cool class of bikes I've been enamored with forever). They're pretty common. The container on the front is used for groceries, but mostly for shuttling one's kids around (usually two children about 5-8 yrs old).

Bikes do have their own throughways, but often share some streets with cars - and, I've witnessed, sometimes violate the unwritten rules of the road and nearly get killed. I saw a Dutch guy get out of his car and yell at a trembling Brit couple on rented bikes. If it happened in the states, I think someone would've been killed and courtcase would dragged on about roadrage and gone to the supreme court for the country to watch on television for 3 weeks. In this case, the incident passed quickly, witnessed by only a lucky few.

I'm pretty sure it takes a lengthy period of immersion to figure out the cycling rules. If I had a bike, I'd shadow one of the elderly. They get around just fine, slowly. They apparently have lived this life a long time and appear to be darn good at getting around. It's rough, but it's awesome to see this system in action. Pedestrians need to be mindful of cars and bikes.

By the way, motorcyclists ALWAYS wear helmets, bicyclists ... never. Opposite Ohio. I haven't seen a single automobile driver speaking on the phone while driving. Been cool so far.

Interational travel attire: pajamas, sparkle shoes, neck pillow.

After many flight delays at Detroit, we made it to Schipol at 9 am in the morning. I watched "I Love You Man" on the flight. It was awesomely funny.

More Audio Books and a Short Walk in Europe (all done today)

I've been listening to Planet Google the past few days. It's a dry sounding narraration, but I'm so engaged, I can't listen while driving for fear I'll have an accident.

Today I listened to the story about Google's acquistion of Keyhole's satellite imaging software which eventually turned into the satellite feature of Google Maps and their product, Google Earth. Two years ago, Google extended maps with street view, initially only in the US. Now it's a feature for most of the world. The world. While I'm typing this, I can hit control T, open a tab, type in maps.google.com and type in "Boulangerie Poilâne France", go to street view and see his storefront showcasing the famous pain Poilâne (we've actually been there once). Pretty astounding.

The 14 tips I'll offer my daughter. Parenting Advice from Anthony Bourdain.

I just finished listening to Bourdain read his own book, Kitchen Confidential. I read this years ago, but listening to it read by Bourdain was like having the wildman himself hanging around as your agitated friend for a few days. It was awesome. Today I listened to the next to the last chapter SO YOU WANT TO BE A CHEF? A COMMENCEMENT ADDRESS. It is the advice I try to convey to my daughter on a daily basis. I know I don't live this completely, but a child gives you the feeling you have a second chance. These things I want her to live (except maybe #9).

1. Be fully committed.
2. Learn Spanish French!
3. Don't steal.
4. Always be on time.
5. Never make excuses or blame others.
6. Never call in sick.
7. Lazy, sloppy and slow are bad.
8. Be prepared to witness every variety of human folly and injustice.
9. Assume the worst. About everybody. But don't let this poisoned outlook affect your job performance.
10. Try not to lie.
11. Avoid restaurants where the owner's name is over the door.
12. Think about that résumé!
13. Read!
14. Have a sense of humor about things. You'll need it.

Bourdain's my idol this week.

If they let me drive it, I'd drive it better than this.

oüch, but fun

Yesterday, late, late in the afternoon, Mrs. DavesBeer and I (while Frankie played her heart out with a friend) went to a place in Easton. It was not very crowded, dark and had a huge flat panel screen in front of a bunch of comfy seats. The seats were relaxing and we could even eat and drink while sitting. Suddenly, the screen became illuminated and began showing mini movies and told us to turn off phones. Eventually, a much longer movie was displayed. It was an amazing place. Brüo was interesting.

Oh, Friday, Terry Gross is interviewing Sacha Baron Cohen. Should be fun.

Girls at the zoo

Sorting photos tonight. Probably noticed, Frankie's photos have come out of the password-protected directory. Frankie's young photos are still there on "her page." Since that page was most visited by my father, it won't be updated; pretty much finished when he stopped reading. More judiciously chosen images will now appear here on the front page. Enjoy.

This is Frankie and some of her buds hanging watching the rhino on their kindergarten year-end field trip.

Hi Mom. We're eating pulled pork, fries and canteloup in front of the computer/tv. We're going to take a bike ride after dinner and then bath. Wish me luck on bedtime.
(I'll be replacing this image throughout your trip)
